Johannesburg Live Earth Green Team Volunteer Positions

Thank you for volunteering for the Live Earth Green Team! This is sure to be an unforgettable experience. The Live Earth concert series hopes to reach upwards of 2 billion people with a simple yet urgent message. Climate change is coming…help us to save our selves!

Each of the Live Earth Concerts will adhere to a long list of specified Green Guidelines. These guidelines will ensure that each concert will be produced with maximum consideration for the environment in every aspect. While at the same time ensuring that the environmental impact of each concert is minimized. These guidelines take into consideration two of the largest environmental impacts caused by human activity today… greenhouse gas emissions and solid waste production. Live Earth is managing greenhouse gas emissions from these events through carbon profiling and offsetting programs designed by our event partners. Solid waste from the events will be managed through a comprehensive recycling, compost and reuse program co-designed by Seven-Star Events, Inc., Pantsula, Conservation International, Mama She’s Waste Recyclers and Top Turf.

The concert, event, and trade show industry is the second largest producer of municipal solid waste in the world behind the construction and demolition industry. A single concert event can produce as little as 9,000 kilos (close 20,000 lbs) to as much as 90,000 kilos (197,000 lbs) of solid waste in a single day. Of that, approximately 75% of the average concert waste stream could be diverted from the landfill by eliminating Styrofoam, using bio-ware and actively recycling and composting. Studies have shown that nearly 75% of almost any waste stream could diverted by recycling and composting. As a Live Earth Green Team Volunteer, your contribution to the event “will” be felt and really “will” make a difference.

Green Team Volunteers will serve the most important of roles. Not only will volunteers help to divert landfill, but they will also serve as educators to the thousands of concert attendees who may have never been exposed to concepts like composting, recycling, landfill diversion, and resource recovery. As we have begun to acclimate to the convenience of a disposable society, every year human beings are throwing away more waste than they did the year before. This is reflected in the fact that landfills are meeting capacity earlier than expected. Many landfills that met capacity months or even years ago are still in operation, simply because there are no other options.

One of the things that will make the concert at Johannesburg both unique and very special to the country is the use of biodegradable plastic service ware. These products are made from corn and potato starches and will completely biodegrade in compost in less than 90 days, as opposed to traditional plastic service ware which can persist for over 450 years in the natural environment. This is important for South Africa considering that the existing landfills are already beyond capacity and still in operation. By using these products alone, we can divert as much as 50% of the concert waste stream and turn it into fertilizing mulch for farmers and gardeners across the region.

Though bio-ware products are unique, they often look and feel just like the traditional plastic items you might see at a concert, so learning to recognize a bio-ware product is a helpful skill for any green team volunteer. If plastic items get into the compost system, they can contaminate the end product and in effect negate our efforts. However, Seven-Star Events, Inc. and Live Earth have mandated that all disposable products used at this event be 100% biodegradable. By composting, recycling and reusing everything that we can, we hope to be able to divert 75% or more of the waste stream produced by this event.
